With the 50th anniversary of Ondo State approaching on February 3, 2026, concerns have continued to grow over what many describe as a lack of visible preparation by the state government despite earlier assurances.
During the celebration of the state’s 49th anniversary in February 2025, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa had publicly announced that a committee would soon be constituted to outline the modalities for the Golden Jubilee celebration.
However, nearly a year after that announcement, there has been no official release of the committee’s membership, no detailed programme of events, and no further public communication regarding the planned celebration.
The absence of concrete steps has triggered fresh questions among stakeholders, residents and even government insiders.
“Nothing has been done so far,” says government source
A senior government source, who spoke with Roving Reporters on condition of anonymity, revealed that the much-anticipated Golden Jubilee plans have not progressed beyond verbal commitments.
“Nothing has been done so far. The government has not set up any committee, no planning structure, no official communication. We are all waiting, but as of now, nothing is happening internally,” the source disclosed.
The insider added that many within government circles are concerned that the state risks approaching its landmark celebration without a clear roadmap.
“This is a major milestone. A 50th anniversary is not something the state should overlook, but there is still no directive or framework. Everyone is just hoping something will happen soon,” the official added.
Observers point to Oyo’s early preparation
Some stakeholders argue that the government should recognise that Oyo State—created the same day as Ondo—has already begun showing seriousness by unveiling its 50th anniversary committee, logo and preparation plans months ahead.
Analysts say the contrast highlights the urgency for Ondo State to take decisive steps to avoid being perceived as unprepared for a landmark celebration.
Ondo’s 40th Anniversary Was Better Structured
Observers have also drawn attention to the more organised nature of the state’s 40th anniversary in 2016, which featured lectures, symposia chaired by eminent Nigerians, project inaugurations and a statewide broadcast by the governor at the time.
They argue that a Golden Jubilee is an even more significant milestone that should ordinarily involve wider planning, branding, documentation initiatives, legacy projects, and broad stakeholder engagement across the 18 local government areas.
Expectations Still High
Analysts say Ondo’s 50th anniversary provides an opportunity to review the state’s socio-economic journey since 1976, celebrate cultural heritage, and set new developmental goals for the decades ahead.
However, without a functioning committee or clear activities announced, those expectations remain in limbo.
Residents are now calling on the government to expedite action, release a formal programme, and provide clarity on preparations for what is expected to be one of the most important commemorations in the state’s history.

There is nothing so much special about the 50th year anniversary especially at this period when people are groaning. Involving or organizing anniversary committee is another way of syphoning public fund. It should a period for sober reflection in our state and the country at large and not a time for merriment. People will view it as an insensitive govt if anything other than that is done.
