••• Unveils N1bn Self-Help Plan
The Modakeke community in Osun State has appealed to the state government to urgently rehabilitate several inner roads that have deteriorated and are now disrupting social, cultural, and commercial activities in the town.
Chairman of the 40th Akoraye Day Planning Committee, Prince Tunmbi Toriola, made the call on Monday during a press conference kicking off this year’s celebrations.
Toriola expressed concern that many roads linking various settlements in the town were in deplorable condition. He noted that the situation had worsened mobility and affected the livelihood of residents.
In response to the growing infrastructural deficits, Toriola announced that the community would be launching a ₦1 billion Community Development Fund during the grand finale of the 2025 Akoraye Day celebrations.
The funds, he said, would support various development projects aimed at improving infrastructure across Modakeke.
“Modakeke has consistently demonstrated its commitment to self-help development. Communities thrive best when government support strengthens local initiatives,” he said.
He urged the Osun State Government to take “immediate and strategic action” to fix dilapidated roads, complete the abandoned bridge at the Old NEPA Area, upgrade health facilities, improve water supply systems, expand drainage channels to prevent flooding, and strengthen security infrastructure.
“Our roads have become a pressing concern. They affect commerce, emergency response, social mobility, and the overall well-being of residents,” he noted.
Highlighting past achievements funded through Akoraye Day contributions, Toriola listed projects such as Modakeke High School, an ultramodern palace, police station, post office and quarters, customary court, magistrate court, and a High Court of Justice.
He disclosed that eminent traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, are expected at the grand finale. He assured that adequate security and logistics have been put in place to ensure a smooth celebration.
Toriola also appealed to residents to continue to uphold peace, adding that harmonious coexistence with neighbouring communities remains essential for sustainable development.
Modakeke leaders had in 2024 sought federal and state intervention following repeated attacks by suspected hoodlums, including the destruction of a town signpost at the Urban Day Area.
